1] Get
Involved!
Spend time online together with your children. Think of websites like
public libraries or museums. You wouldn’t let your children visit
alone – and you’d check them out beforehand to see if they’re
appropriate for a family visit.
When you’re online together, take every opportunity to help your
children learn about good judgment and making appropriate choices.
2] Get
Organised!
Put your computer in a shared space in your home.
Make an Internet Family Contract with your children, which details how
and when they can use the internet. <<Download
a copy>>
Remember it’s
a contract between two parties. If you expect your children to abide
by it, you must abide by it, too!
Register your details
for a child safety email newsletter, available from many of the websites
listed on the right.
3] Get
Smart!
Get to know your computer and its software and how it all works. Learn
the new terminology and educate yourself about new technology. If you
need some help, take a computer course!
Ask your children
how they view the computer and how they use it. You never know –
you might just learn something from them!
