It’s HUGE
– much bigger than anybody can imagine. It is a global phenomenon
which is accessible at the click of a button. From your living room
– or your lawn chair – you can visit the whole world.
It’s PUBLIC – which means anybody and everybody
is out there. People with every kind of motivation are producing websites,
sending emails or visiting chat rooms.
And it’s a LIBRARY. It’s filled with loads
of stuff, positive and negative, accurate and inaccurate. You name it,
it’s there – good information, bad information, education,
entertainment, truth, rumours, and lies.
Children need help sifting through this vast pile of stuff.
As a parent, you can help filter the good from the bad, and help your
children cultivate good judgment. But you can only help them if YOU
ARE THERE!
Most internet service providers provide tools for parents. You can set
up your parental controls to filter out unsuitable content. You can
also purchase filtering software and let it block websites using key
words.
However, we think the best filter is YOU! Nobody knows your children’s
needs and interests better than you do. Explore the world wide web WITH
your children. While you’re discovering great websites which engage
and educate, you’ll also be discovering more about one another.
